Published in Hardcover by Darlington Productions (April, 1999)
Authors: David R. Markov and David R. Markov, Steven J. Zaloga Andrew W. Hull
Average review score:

An essential source
Profusely illustrated (albeit in B&W) and quite detailed without being overwhelming. Though it could use another editing pass, overall it's indispensable for anyone with an interest in modern tank design and development. Some of the variants in this book haven't been heard of in the West, even by the well-informed.

A must-have resource from a team of true experts.
Simply put, this book is a must-have resource for anyone interested in the subject of Soviet/Russian armor and artillery. It is the most up-to-date and comprehensive reference book of its type published to-date; definately required reading.

Speeches That Changed the World
Published in Hardcover by Westminster John Knox Press (July, 1999)
Authors: Owen Collins and Andrew Young
Average review score:

The Greatest Inspiration
There is something noble about those things that inspire you. I got this book because I speak for a living and wanted to read the words of some of the most articulate speakers of all time. When I got this book, I found a volume of inspiration beyond what I expected. There are, of course, the great speeches like MLK's "I have a dream" speech and Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, but there are also a good number of jewels that most people haven't seen; like a brief submitted to the Supreme Court by Mother Theresa that made me think long and hard about a very tough subject and reexamine my stance somewhat. If you purchase this book, you won't be disappointed.

If you love history, you'll love this
This is a remarkable collection of famous speeches, as well as those that are not very well known. It is organized in chronological order, beginning with Moses and ending with Hilary Clinton. If you're looking to expand your knowledge of history, or simply looking to see what great speeches are made of, this is the book for you!

Sport Stars: The Cultural Politics of Sporting Celebrity
Published in Paperback by Routledge (01 August, 2001)
Authors: David L. Andrews and Steven J. Jackson
Average review score:

Exquisite Postmodern Critique of Celebrity-hood
This is an excellent, accessible collection of well-written essays on the intersection of sport, celebrity, and culture. In particular, the essays on "Gretzky Nation," "Global Hingis," and Michael Jordan were thought-provoking and did more than just glamourise the world of celebrity athletes. Highly recommended to anyone interested in seeing the cultural relavance of sporting figures in everyday global culture.

Brilliant!
Great book. Complete, and thought provoking. I especially enjoyed the chapter on "Global Hingis"!

St. Brodag's Isle
Published in Paperback by Indypublish.Com (25 June, 2001)
Authors: Andy Walsh and Andrew Walsh
Average review score:

Ready For Superior Fun and Fantasy?
Are you all set for a comic romp which the best British authors deliver? "St. Brodag's Isle" is a humorous novel, but one with an edge. Nothing is sacrosanct-- except perhaps a bow to sainthood. Or, perhaps not! Each chapter opens with yet another non-sequitur from St. Brodag, founder of this mythical British island, a rock lying somewhere in the North Sea. (The Saint's pearls of wisdom include: "Only the gulls know where the sea is.") So who will be "blessed" with a posting to this bleak island and given the pompus title of "British Ambassador?" Could there even be a more ridiculous bastion, of the former empire, where one might be dispatched? Simple answer: "No!" Yet, that is the fate which befalls the luckless hero, Philip Digby-Fischer. As though that were not demoralizing enough, this modern-day comic Job knows not what lurks in the hearts of the islanders. How many times can they disgrace him? More to the point: Why are certain inhabitants so dedicated to doing so? How many times can Philip be disgraced, yet maintain his dignity? How many times before his stiff upper lip, and natural humanity towards others, will finally crack? Through each disaster which befalls him is more hilarious than the one before, the reader will empathize with Digby-Fischer as he firmly keeps his demeanor and optimism intact. If you are ready for fun and fantasy, this is the novel for you. Suggestion: You might wish to have a bit of Celtic music, playing as you read. It will only enhance the wonderful atmosphere created by Andy Wash for "St. Brodag's Isle." (Personally, I am looking forward to even more comic adventures which might be in the offing on this mythical island.)

Put This One On Your Gift List
If you are a fan of droll British humor, do yourself a favor and grab this book! St. Brodag's Isle is an episodic romp that just might be the sleeper of the year in it's genre. This is a premier book for the author and as such deserves all the attention it can garner. As British humor goes, there are few genuinely engaging books on the market right now that are contemporary but fortunately for us, St. Brodag's Isle is here to remind us that there will always be an England. Governor-by-appointment Phillip Digby-Fischer, Mayor Henry Geruish, and the other assorted residents of St. Brodag's (along with the rare Kittiwakes that have made the Island their home) will live cheerfully on in the reader's memory long after the last page has been read. Written in the spirit of P.G. Wodehouse, this is a book of subtle wit and charm that demands a sequel.

St. Vincent Ferrer: Angel of the Judgment
Published in Paperback by Tan Books & Publishers (January, 2001)
Author: Andrew Pradel
Average review score:

The greatest saint you never heard of.
I started reading this book after hearing about St Vincent Ferrer in another book (Trial, Tribulation, and Triumph) on apocalypticism. St Vincent Ferrer is perhaps the most amazing saint of all time, but for some reason we don't hear much about him anymore. He was well known for his preaching which attracted crowds so large (tens of thousands) that he often had to preach outdoors. He also performed so many miracles (often 10 or more per day) that the Vatican gave up trying to document them all when his cause for sainthood was under investigation. What's interesting is that St Vincent Ferrer travelled and preached during times much like our own, when people were turning away from God and the world was in danger of chastisement. St Vincent's passionate preaching converted many sinners and saved the world once before. Perhaps it is time today for us to start praying for this saint to intercede for us.

The Mircle Worker
When I first heard of St. Vincent Ferrer, most of the information was either boring to very little about this great Saint. After buying and reading this book, I learned many things about him from his sufferings to his triumps over Satan. One of the things that amazed me about this Saint was all the mircles that he preformed from the womb until his death. He even proved that he is the Angle of Judgement by bringing a woman back to life. He could touch the hardest of souls by his preaching and many followed this Saint. After reading this book, you may follow St. Vincent Ferrer, too? St. Vincent Ferrer, pray for us.

Stacy's Heart
Published in Hardcover by Xlibris Corporation (August, 2001)
Authors: Andrew Cary Rainey and Cary Rainey
Average review score:

Very original story
Highly recommended reading for vampire story fans, Very unique story and writing style.

Finally, a horse of a different color
Of late, I've been disappointed in what the horror genre has had to offer as far as new talent is concerned. For years now, I've been patiently waiting for a new generation of authors to come onto the scene like King, Barker, Straub, McCammon, Koontz, Campbell, etc. once did (seemingly eons ago) and shake things up - but the wait has been long, and I was beginning to wonder if I was waiting on nothing more than an illusion. However, Cary Rainey's first novel, Stacy's Heart, has breathed new life into my hopes.

Stacy's Heart tells the story of Kyle Crader. Kyle grows up in Birmingham, Alabama, and by the time he leaves home for Califonia on the night of his graduation he has learned to hate it with a white-hot passion. Intending to mock his hometown, he writes a satirical novel filled with rampant bigotry and sexism. The book is an immense hit, spawning a series of hate crimes across America, as well as a movie and a big-money book contract. In the course of promoting the film, Kyle is asked to return to Birmingham, and does - trying to believe it's for the money while knowing in his heart it's because he wants one last shot at the girl he's always loved from afar. Stacy. They say that home is where the heart is - and Kyle is about to discover the truth of that in ways he never imagined.

This book avoids the pitfall that a lot of first novels seem to fall into, that type of prose where you can almost see the writer behind the scenes feeling his or her way around. That can be a very distracting thing, and makes it difficult to keep your mind *in* the book as opposed to just on it. But Stacy's Heart has a very mature voice, a wonderful ebb and flow, and I was very quickly pulled completely into Kyle's world and swept along with its currents. Mr. Rainey's take on the south is perfect in this book - honest enough to be believable, but surreal and twisted enough to play right along with the unfolding tale. And he's not afraid to rack up a body count, either.

The climax this book builds to is nothing short of unbelievable - in terms of the story itself as well as the manner in which it is told. I don't wish to give anything away, and so I'll leave it at saying that, among other things, there's an apocalyptic graveyard battle scene which you do *not* want to miss. Don't start the last hundred pages of this book unless you intend to read every single one of them, because you won't be able to put it aside.

An excellent read, and the best first book I've read in a long while - especially in this field. If the horror genre has a few more Cary Raineys in the up-and-coming pipeline, then that "revolution" I've been waiting on shouldn't be too far off.

Stealth Pacs: How Israel's American Lobby Seeks to Control U.S. Middle East Policy
Published in Paperback by Amer Educational Trust (February, 1990)
Authors: Richard H. Curtiss, Parker L. Payson, and Andrew I. Killgore
Average review score:

An excellent compilation of important facts and figures.
Richard H. Curtiss has presented a thoroughly documented text that attempts to present the underlying influence of pro-Israel lobbying groups on our legislature . This is a must read for American citizens interested in understanding how the interests of a foreign entity can sometimes compromise the values of the American Constitution.(p)

Curtiss understands the sensitivity of this subject matter and seeks not to blame, but only to inform common people such as myself on the extent of pro-Israel lobbying in mainstream USA. This book sheds the light on how effective grass roots lobbying and finacial contributions can motivate legislators to formulate foreign policy in a region where our nation has important commercial and diplomatic investments. The results can many times run counter to the interests of the American taxpayers.

Still a Steelers Fan
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (September, 2002)
Author: Brad Andrew Shutzberg
Average review score:

Still cheering for this fan!
What started off as a newly 'out' gay man's effort to communicate with his parents has evolved into a touching - and at times amusing - autobiographical essay.

Included in the book are quite a few responses from friends at the news, responses which serve to paint a fascinating portrait of the author.

A good read - I recommend it highly!

Provides valuable personal experience and insights
Still A Steelers Fan is the personal testimony and memoir of Brad Andrew Shutzber, a gay man who candidly and engaging reveals what it is like to live in the closet, hiding one's sexual orientation, and also what it means to finally come out and be honest to friends, associates, and family. Written specifically to answer the questions of his own parents, Still A Steelers Fan is very highly recommended for providing valuable personal experience and insights for others who have might have questions about friends and family members with a non-heterosexual orientation, or who may be debating life outside the closet for themselves.
